The Central Texas Area Museum Presents:

The Annual Summer Genealogical Workshop 2006

July 15th 2006: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 

Longhorns and Scots traveled the Chisholm Trail creating a legacy that is celebrated throughout Texas. Come find your family footprints at the Central Texas Area Museum's summer Genealogy Workshop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, July 15th.

A free Beginner's Class in Genealogical Research will be offered from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the museum's Hall of the Clans. Following the free session, all who wish to attend the day long workshop may purchase a ticket for $30.00 which includes lunch and refreshments. The workshop moderator Shelby Smith will appear in full Scottish attire; he will introduce the guest panel who are Jackie Passey of Edmond, Oklahoma; Beth Rangel of Garland, Texas; Tom Flinn of Lakeway, Texas and Bill Covington of Cedar Hill, Texas. Shelby Smith is a member of the San Antonio Scottish Society and founder of Sword and Thistle, Inc., a Scottish cultural group. He will also discuss the history of the lowland Scots, including their habits and customs, handouts about where the Scots settled in the United States will be provided later in the afternoon.

Starting off the program will be Tom Flinn in his premiere Salado appearance discussing the trail of the Chisholms from Maryland to Texas. His research has revealed many spellings of the name Chisholm such as Chessum, Chesholm and Chism. Flinn is a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas, the Sons of the American Revolution, as well as the Clan Chisholm of North America.

The Morning's other speakers will include Beth Chism Rangel, a 30-year teacher, licensed professional counselor and active speaker on genealogy, will share additional insights into the Chisms after they arrived in Texas. Rangel, who serves as a trustee of the museum, has done extensive research on her ancestors, including Texas Ranger, J.C. Turner. She is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Texas Ranger Association, as well as being active in nature conservation and co-owner of Rangel's Peach Patch.

The third morning speaker will be Bill Covington, a history instructor from Cedar Hill, who will transport participants to the days of the American Revolutionary War with a uniformed presentation of "Scots in the Colonial Army. " Along with an impression of a soldier, Covington will discuss his own search for his Revolutionary War heritage.

Opening the afternoon session at 1:30 p.m., Jackie Passey will discuss her wide-sweeping genealogical research, throughout Central Texas highlighting the Gordon, Henderson and Gray families. Mrs. Passey has often contributed to the museum workshops.

The events will be held in the auditorium next door to the museum located on Main Street across from the Stage Coach Inn Restaurant. Advanced registration is requested by July 13th.
