Scottish Clan Gathering and Highland Games Frequently Asked Questions:
- Since you've moved to the Salado Civic Center is everything indoors?
Nope. The Clan tents, Vendors, Entertainment and Competitions will be held outside on the Salado Civic Center grounds. The only event being held in the building will be the Church and Kirking Service.
- Who benefits from the Scottish Clan Gathering and Highland Games?
The Central Texas Area Museum. The Central Texas Area Museum is a non-profit organization which operates on proceeds from the Scottish Clan Gathering and Highland Games as well as independent memberships and donations.
- What activities are included in my day ticket?
Vendors, Clan Tents, Athletic Events, Highland Dancing, Piping, and Drumming Competitions at the Salado Civic Center Grounds. The Beginners Genealogy Workshop on Saturday at the Scots Clan Hall is also included.
- What activities are NOT included with my day ticket and require an additional fee?
Genealogy Workshop, Clan Wecome Social, Tattoo, Celtic Concert, and the Tartan Ceilidh.
- What is a "Texas" Tattoo?
The "Texas" Tattoo is a musical interlude of invitation and responses between military and pipe bands. The word ‘tattoo’ comes from the closing-time cry in the inns in the Low Countries during the 17th and 18th centuries - ‘Doe den tap toe’ (‘Turn off the taps’). Join us for a time of music and community!
- What is a Clan Welcome Ceremony and Social?
Fire and pageantry reminiscent of clan gatherings in the ancient Scottish Highlands. Bagpipes and drums accompany torch-bearing clans
as they gather to be recognized by the Honored Clan Chief and to pledge support for the Games. Clan Welcome Social follows in the Museum's Scots Hall of the Clans. - What is a Tartan Ceilidh?
What in the world is that? How do you pronounce it? It is an informal gathering and singing and is pronounced "Kay-lee". In Scotland, groups gather to play and sing the old songs. Their is seldom a prepared program; it's just a happening. Each one does his/her own thing. Come join us for a bit of food and fun, listen to the pipes & drums; hear singing of the good ole Scottish songs; join in the singing clapping, "h-o-o-o-king" and foot stomping of your own! Due to necessity, we do have a more structured format than is essentially characteristic of a Ceilidh. It is still great fun for young and old!
