Scottish Clan Gathering and Highland Games Frequently Asked Questions:
- Who benefits from the Scottish Clan Gathering and Highland Games?
The Central Texas Area Museum. The Central Texas Area Museum is a non-profit organization which operates on proceeds from the Scottish Clan Gathering and Highland Games as well as independent memberships and donations.
- No Pets or Alcohol!? Are you crazy?
At this time the current combination of venue policies, resource limitations, and safety/liability concerns do not permit us to allow pets or alcohol on the grounds of the Salado Scottish Clan Gathering and Highland Games. For one or two years we did make an exception for Specific Breed Interest Clubs to have a show. Scotties and Westies were included, but those exemptions were at the express invitation of the landholder. As this event is the single largest fund-raising event for our non-profit organization, we do regularly review this policy and others concerning the event and take your feedback under advisement.
- What activities are included in my day ticket?
Vendors, Clan Tents, Athletic Events, Highland Dancing, Piping, Drumming Competitions and Children's Games at the Robertson Ranch.
- What activities are NOT included with my day ticket and require an additional fee?
Genealogy Workshop, Fingertip Supper, Ceilidh, Tattoo and the Tartan Ball.
- What is a Ceilidh?
What in the world is that? How do you pronounce it? A Ceilidh is technically an informal gathering and singing and is pronounced "Kay-lee". In Scotland, groups gather to play and sing the old songs. There is seldom a prepared program; it's just a happening. Each one does his/her own thing. Here, we have had a structured Ceilidh since the very beginning. Come join us to listen to the pipes & drums; see Highland dancing at its best; hear singing of the good ole Scottish songs; join in the singing clapping, "h-o-o-o-king" and foot stomping of your own! Due to necessity, we do have a more structured format than is essentially characteristic of a Ceilidh. It is still great fun for young and old!
- What is a "Texas" Tattoo?
The "Texas" Tattoo is a musical interlude of invitation and responses between military and pipe bands. The word ‘tattoo’ comes from the closing-time cry in the inns in the Low Countries during the 17th and 18th centuries - ‘Doe den tap toe’ (‘Turn off the taps’). Join us for a time of music and community!
- What is a Fingertip Supper?
A Fingertip Supper is an informal occasion where dinner is served buffet style, judges are introduced, announcements made and entertainment prevails.
- What is a Tartan Ball?
The Tartan Ball is a formal affair where all Scots dress in their best. A formal dinner is served, followed by live entertainment to dance the night away.
