  • 9:00-10:00 am         Scottish Surnames: Creating an Identity. - by Mike Pearson

Mike Pearson will explore the origins, roots, and necessity of surname development as it applies to Scottish surnames.

   

  • 10:00-11:00 am       All Things Scottish at Your Local Family History Center. - by Kathy Garcia

Kathy Garcia, Director FHC Killeen, Texas, unveils the breadth of Scottish records available from the Family History Library in Salt Lake, Utah through local Family History Centers.  Ms. Garcia will focus on the pre-1855 Church of Scotland records and discuss what is available on microfilm and within the IGI database.  Find out what other resources are available through the Family History Library catalog and the FamilySearch.org website from online how-to documents to vital records, census and more.

  • 11:00-12:15 pm       Scottish Research – A Look At History. - by Janet Cook

Using a time line and giving tips for research, Ms. Janet Cook will explain some ‘History of the Scots’ that researchers need to know before they try to find the link to Scotland.

  • 1:30-2:30 pm            Digital Access to Scottish Records. - by Bill Buckner

Bill Buckner explores the new ScotlandsPeople Centre in Edinburgh in addition to other online resources, such as the Scottish Archive Network.  Fee vs. Free - discover what records are available and what you get for your dollar.

 

  • 2:30-3:30 pm            Working with a Map: Migration Patterns 1700 to 1850. - by Janet Cook

Using various aids, Ms. Janet Cook will walk the genealogist through the States as they follow the “shanks mare” route of the generations before. Focus of the talk is on the area EAST of the Mississippi River and SOUTH of Philadelphia.

  • 3:30-4:30 pm            Surname DNA projects and Genealogy Research. - by Mike Pearson

During this lecture, Mike Pearson will discuss using DNA to aid genealogy research to examine potential family connections when documentation may not be available and to explore ancestral roots.

 

 

 

Bill Buckner is a librarian with over fifteen years of professional experience. He received his MS in Library Science from the University of North Texas in 1990. For the past nine years, he has served as the Manager of the Periodicals/Genealogy Division at the Waco-McLennan County Library. He has had numerous speaking engagements for service, hereditary, and historical organizations. In 2002, Bill founded the McLennan County Cemetery Interest Group (MCCIG). He established a cooperative relationship with the local genealogy society culminating in a very popular annual Genealogy Lock-In. This event has helped bring together organizations and individuals that use, support, and have an interest in the Waco-McLennan County Genealogy collection.

 

 

 

Mike Pearson Mike Pearson has been a genealogy researcher for over 12 years. He completed the National Genealogical Society's Home Study Course. He is currently seeking certification as a Professional Genealogist. He has helped clients learn about their family history that was previously unknown to them. He encourages people to learn their family history and offers research advice to those who wish to undertake their research on their own. He is a Commissioner for the Texas Branch of the Clan Gunn Society of North America.

 

 

 

Kathryn GarciaKathryn L. Garcia is a native of the Pacific Northwest. Born in Oregon and raised in Washington. She has been the current Director of the Killeen Family History Center for over 6 years. Kathryn started doing family history research in her early 20's. She has attended several National Conferences over the years and had attended the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy two years ago. Most of her research has been with United States records as her roots are deep in America. Over the years she has uncovered several Scottish lines but has not, yet, been able to trace them to their locations within Scotland. The surnames she researches with a Scottish connection are Scott, Campbell, Gibson, Martin, Ross and McGhee. She and her family have lived in the Killeen area for 16 years. Her husband is retired from the US Army. They are a solid military family with one son now serving in Iraq, one daughter who is active duty Air Force, and three son-in-laws who are military as well.

 

 

Janet CookMs. Janet Cook has been working on genealogy for 18 years and has been giving talks on various subjects of her research for over 6 years. Janet writes for the Scottish Society of San Antonio newsletter; the North Carolina Scots-Irish Heritage Tourism Council has published her work. Ms. Cook frequently speaks at various libraries, clubs and workshops on genealogy; she enjoys speaking to a packed house at San Antonio Genealogy and History Society functions.
